NE-10 Broadcasts Producing Major Opportunities for Students

By Andrew Hoenig ’19

Fall semester at Franklin Pierce has officially ended and most students have gone home for winter break. However, there is still action on campus as the men’s and women’s basketball teams have several games.

On December 18, Ravens Sports Network put on yet another set of NE-10 broadcasts in back-to-back games for women’s and men’s basketball taking the court against the Assumption College Greyhounds. Headed by Dr. Kristen Nevious of the Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication, the RSN has been broadcasting with all new equipment in order to make games available for viewing and listening online in accordance with the NE-10.

Games have been broadcast at the Fieldhouse since the beginning of the season with four home games for the men and five for the women. Each student involved now has official RSN press passes and in addition to the three original cameras for the broadcasts, a fourth camera is being added for a view of the play-by-play and color commentators on the opposite side of the court. Names of the broadcast teams also have been added to the tapes so that students can use them as part of their demo reels for prospective employers.

Sophomore Ian Melewski, who worked as color commentator for the women’s game against Assumption, was thrilled to take advantage of the experience.

“I’m loving the opportunity I have in front of me,” said Melewski.

Junior Tyler Aragao, former RSN student director, has been a part of the broadcasts for the men’s games as two teams were devised during this semester. One team covers the men’s games while the other covers the women’s games. Once the new semester begins, the teams will switch roles so that equal coverage opportunity is given to all the students involved in the RSN broadcasts.

“We’ve had some of our finest (students) in action and I’m proud to call many of them my friends and colleagues,” said Aragao.

The RSN team is still developing as internships with the crew are now available starting in January. New equipment continues to come in such as a RSN backdrop to signify the media presence of the team in the Fieldhouse.

“This a great continuing opportunity for our students and we hope they will take advantage of it and help us put on great broadcasts,” said Dr.Nevious.
