Column: Winter Wardrobe Essentials

by Aya Poirier ’21

Time to get cozy! It’s time to start thinking of appropriate yet stylish staples to wear this winter season.

This season commends the return of the classic sweater, the pullover. It looks great on its own and can serve as a great layering piece bundled under jackets, flannels, or cardigans. They come in several styles, such as crew or v-necks, and can be either form-fitting or loose around the waist. Anyone can find one flattering for their figure! Another popular style is the turtleneck. They don’t weigh you down and are perfect during the transitional months. However, if you’re looking to wear something “outside-of-the-box”, a poncho could be something to consider. Unlike other sweaters, ponchos do not have defined sleeve. Many layers can be worn underneath without the discomfort of a tighter jacket. Ponchos also come in many cute patterns.

Moreover, a simple way to find the perfect winter items are by looking for pieces that are versatile and can easily be paired with anything. Investing in a nice jacket is a great place to start. For example, an overcoat or pea coat will provide that polished look. Pairing this with a pair of nice boots, whether they are ankle or knee-highs, will add to the look. Neutral colors, such as black, grey, and beige, will match with almost any outfit you put together.

Lastly, some printed socks, a beanie, or a knitted scarf are excellent ways to spice up an outfit. For instance, having your socks peek through your boots is on trend, chic, and adds personality to your look. Also, scarves are an easy way to accessorize and can be styled in many ways, including the classic loop, pull-through, and neck wrap.

Fighting the cold weather without sacrificing your fashion taste is easy when you look in the right places. Once you adjust your style with this suggested list, getting ready in the morning should be a piece of cake.
